Fertility 101

3 out of 5 couples conceive within 6 months of trying

One in four take between 6 months and 1 year

For everyone else… conceiving a baby takes more than one year and indicates there may be something hindering conception.

If you’re a female, at some point in your life you have thought about having babies. How many you will have, when you will have them, or maybe you’ve decided to not have them at all. Either way, having a baby is complex and multifactorial.

To make it easier for you, I’ve put together a basic list of requirements needed for conception.

Ovulation

Do you know if you’re ovulating? Signs of ovulation include fertile mucous, a rise in basal body temperature and cervical position (these body signs are also used in the Fertility Awareness Method which I will talk more about in a later post)

Intercourse

This is a big one. How often are you engaging in sexual intercourse with your partner and does it coincide with your fertile window? As a general rule I like to recommend clients take part in intercourse every 2 days to ensure they are not missing a valuable opportunity to conceive.

Sperm quality/quantity

Has your partner been tested to ensure everything is all good on their part? after all 50% of your baby’s genetics comes from your partner.

  • Supplementation with the antioxidant CoQ10(ubiquinol) may also be beneficial to improve sperm count and motility.
  • Reducing alcohol intake and quitting smoking is also protective towards sperm.
  • Ensure your partner eats a well balanced diet high in omega-3 fatty acids, wholegrains, fruit and vegetables, nuts, seeds and legumes.
  • Maintaining a healthy body weight also helps to improve sperm health.
